Why is God silent?
I have had many friends say to me, “God doesn’t speak to me the way He speaks to you. I don’t hear Him. He’s silent for me.“
I felt that way too until I understood how God speaks.
Many of us expect God to speak to us in huge ways. A miracle, a miraculous sign, an audible booming voice from the heavens. And the truth is, God is always speaking to us.
But maybe it’s just the fact that we haven’t been listening.
I went from waiting to hear God’s voice, to searching for God’s voice.
I made it a lifestyle of keeping an ear out for things that God was trying to say to me.
Sometimes he would speak to me while listen to the radio, watching a movie, in the grocery store. He speaks to me through friends and family, through correction, through my feelings and emotions, through my humor. There are no limits to the various ways God can speak to you personally.
But there is also a tried and true method.
And you cannot tell me that God is silent if your Bible has been closed.
God doesn’t speak to me.
Well, has your Bible been closed? That is one surefire way to hear from God since it’s a book written for you.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrew 4:12
The word of God is living and active! It builds our faith, it can be used as a weapon, it discerns our thoughts and our hearts! That is one powerful book.
God is actively wanting to reach you where you are at through his Word! And the more we spend time with Him, the easier it is to hear His voice in the everyday things.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8
We need to be reading our Bibles daily. God uses the word to speak to us and relate to us. It shows that we are actively pursuing and drawing near to Him. He is not a forceful God. He is a gentleman. He will only get involved in your life as much as you allow him to.
And He desperately longs to be close to us, speak to us and restore us.
So I encourage you today, if you feel that God is silent, open your Bible. And look for Him in ordinary life. If you always have an ear open to hear from Him, you’ll be shocked how often God is speaking to you.

Pray with me!
Father God, forgive me for not reading the Word and pursuing you as much as I should be. I know there are moments that it feels like you are silent, but thank you that you want to draw near to me and speak to me. Help me to notice when you’re speaking and help me to listen. I want us to be close. I draw near to you today. Speak to me and reveal yourself to me.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
