Every year, as New Year’s Eve approaches, I start to think about the new year approaching.
What do I want this new year to look like? What do I want to improve? Who do I want to be? What am I striving for?
I like to have 1-3 words that I want my new year to encompass. My “word of the year”.
They are very intentionally chosen, prayed over and thought about.
But how do you know what words to choose?
1 It should be something that you are striving for!
Who do you want to be this year? What are your goals?
Do you need to focus? Work on being disciplined? Be more positive? Go on more adventures? Have quality time with loved ones? Grow in your walk with God? Be more patient?
Whatever your goals are, your word of the year should work right alongside those goals.
2 It should challenge you to be better!
What were your struggles this past year? What goals did you fail to accomplish?
Make a list of the lows and struggles of the year and see what they all have in common.
Did you get bad grades? Fail to keep your body healthy? Struggle with staying clean or organized?
Then maybe your word of the year should be focus, determination, perseverance, disciplined, or persist.
Were you in a bad mood all year? Lash out at people? Get frustrated on a daily basis?
Then maybe your word of the year should joy, happiness, positive, calm, considerate, or improve.
Take your biggest flaws and choose a word that calls you to action to overcome those flaws.
3 It should call you to action!
My husband and I thought long and hard about our words of the year. When we finally decided on them, we wrote them out big and stuck them up on the fridge where we knew we would see them everyday.
Seeing those words every day reminds us of who we want to be and want we want. It calls us to action. It forces our brains to constantly be conscious of those little words (that make such a big impact)!
And when you are always aware of those words, you make decisions based on them! It is so cool how the mind works!
For the year 2021,I prayed over what words I wanted to encapsulate this new year.
Intentional, consistency, and delight.
I want to be intentional with my words, with my relationships and my focus.
I am striving for consistency with my spiritual growth, work and health.
I want to delight in the Lord no matter the circumstances, because I spent way too much time in frustration in 2020.
What is your word of the year? Here are some ideas!
