How sensitive are you?
I remember how everyone used to tell me I was too sensitive or emotional. And having the personality type that I have, that is the most offensive thing in the world. I pride myself on being sensitive, because that’s just who I am.
I enjoy the range of emotions and feelings that life brings, even the sad ones. I love empathizing with others in whatever they are going through. My sensitivity is a gift.
But how sensitive are you?
I’m not saying that you have to be emotional all the time if that’s just not who you are.
But…does your heart break when you are driving down the road and see a homeless person asking for food, or do you judge them? Do you get upset when you see someone else in pain? Do you want to pray for the people you see out and about who are struggling physically? Do you want to share the gospel with those who really need it?
Romans 12:9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.
Romans 12:15-16 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Be sensitive to each other’s needs – don’t think yourselves better than others, but make humble people your friends. Don’t be conceited.
If the Bible is telling us to be sensitive and get on other people’s level, then we need to be. There is so much need in the world we live in, and as Christians, it’s our job to fill those needs. Whether that’s being hospitable, sharing our money or material things, praying for hurting people, empathizing with those who are in pain, or sharing the gospel with people.
Being sensitive is not a bad thing. God is sensitive. He is perfect and all-knowing. He is the inventor of feelings and sensitivity. His heart breaks when He sees us in pain and He rejoices with us in our triumphs.
We need to look for ways to empathize and serve others. We need to try be as understanding as possible. We need to always be on the lookout for needs that we can fill.
I remember when I was in high school, my friends and I would pair up and go to our local Walmart and look for people to pray for. It sounds silly, but it trained us to always have our eyes open and our hearts ready to share the heart of Jesus.
It’s time for us to rise up and stop sitting back and waiting for other people to do our job. You are in the time and place you are for a reason.
So, how sensitive are you?
