Do you need to declutter?
My husband and I were laying in bed one day, talking and dreaming before we went to sleep. We were thinking of all the things we could ever dream of if we had unlimited money, especially because we currently don’t have tons of money to play around with.
All night, as I tried to lay down to go to sleep, I just kept hearing God whisper to me the word simplify.
Me: God, how much more can I simplify? I’m eating tuna out of a pouch for lunch every day and I can’t seem to get the fishy taste out of my mouth. I hate it.
God: I want you to simplify. Declutter.
Me: I don’t have much more I can declutter.
God: Sierra, have I not provided for your every need? Your bills are always paid on time. You have food to eat and clothes on your back. I want to give you more, I want to bless you, but I want to trust you with the little that you have now. It’s good to dream, it’s good to have goals. But no matter how much money you dream of making, it will never compare to what I can give you. You certainly cannot take your possessions with you when you die, so what was the point of spending money on things you didn’t need. Declutter. Simplify. Strip everything away until it’s just me left.
I laid awake, marinating on those words.
A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God. Since we entered the world penniless and will leave it penniless, if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet, that’s enough. 1 Timothy 6:6-8
I want to be rich like that. “The rich simplicity of being myself before God.”
I cannot take my mansion or my fancy car to heaven with me. And it’s not bad to have those things, but when God said to me strip everything away until it’s just me left, it reminded me that I want everything I own to honor God and bring glory back to Him in some way.
The next day, I went through my drawers full of clothes and makeup I never wore. I tossed out everything I just didn’t need in my life. And I think we need to do that with our technology and our thoughts too. Get rid of things with bad memories attached. Declutter our mind.
I want to get to a point where Jesus is the only thing that I see, where my eyes are fixed on him without the distraction and clutter of life. I want to simplify my life, not complicate it. Til it’s just him left.
The fact of the matter is that things distract us from focusing on the one true thing that matters most. It’s time to simplify, my friends.
