Do you have the drive?
Years ago, I wanted to be a star of the stage and screen. I took voice lessons, acting class, performed in musicals and aspired to do and be so many different things.
25 and still doing community theatre, a friend’s mom and I were talking about it. “Sierra, you need to be real with yourself because there is no wrong answer. But do you actually have the drive to be this Broadway movie star that you want to be? Because if you did, you would be working much harder, be much more disciplined and nothing would get in your way. The talent is there but maybe ‘the drive’ is not. There’s nothing wrong with also settling down, getting married and having a family. Maybe that’s where your drive really is.“
I sat there dumbfounded, and maybe even slightly offended. But she was right. No matter how much I wanted it, I never could muster up the discipline that the career needed. I had the talent, but I just didn’t have the drive to make it happen, only excuses.
Maybe you have something you are striving for but just don’t have the drive to complete.
I believe God gives us a supernatural drive to accomplish the dreams we are supposed to accomplish. A lot of the time we are dreaming of things that God doesn’t want for us and we like to pretend that God told us to do it in the first place.
I’m vocally talented, God must want me to be a famous singer.
I like performing in musicals, God must want me to move to New York and be on Broadway.
I like acting, God must want me to move to Hollywood.
I like children, God must want me to open an orphanage.
I like Africa, God must want me to be a missionary.
I like painting, God must want me to be an artist.
I want to be a mom, God must want me to have a million kids.
These are all things I’m embarrassed to admit that I thought once upon a time.
God does want us to use our gifts, especially if it brings the glory back to Him.
But I think we really need to sit down and think about what it is we want and what God wants, because they may be two completely different things. Or maybe they coincide.
We find that the more we seek God, the more our dreams align with His.
And once you figure out what God wants for your life, you will find the drive, that doors are opened for you and you will find such a passion for it. It will still require work and discipline, but God gives us to grace to see it to completion because it’s what He wants too!
Psalm 57:2 says, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”
No matter what, we need to ask God to show us how to use our gifts and passions in the best ways possible. He is faithful and fulfills his purposes for us. If we give God the reins, we will have a better life than we ever could of imagined, using our gifts, talents, and personality in the best ways imaginable. It’s a much more fulfilling life doing it God’s way!
So, do you have the drive?

Pray with me!
Father God, thank you for the gifts and dreams you have placed in me. Help me to align them with what You want for me. I want to be used by you and for you. Give me the strength and drive to see these goals through. Forgive me if I’ve pursued things I shouldn’t have. Thank you that you know what’s best for me.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
