Are you overwhelmed?
I remember when I first moved to Stockholm in Sweden. It was my first week there and I am severely directionally challenged. I struggle with remembering directions and locations. It just doesn’t stick.
I was coming home in the afternoon from a rehearsal, got off the subway and onto a bus. I got off at the wrong stop and wandered around, looking for my house. Hours had passed and it had snowed almost 2 feet. I was cold, alone and now, in the complete dark of night. And supposedly, I didn’t live in the best area of Stockholm.
I started to panic, especially because it was dark and I only spoke English. I was so overwhelmed that I just started crying, walking down the road in tears, whining to God about how lost I was. And suddenly I was at my front door. A 5 minute walk turned into 5 hours.
This past year was one of the most confusing and overwhelming years of our lives. We felt alone, in the dark, lied to, unsafe. We wondered if the light of day would ever break through, and sometimes we still wonder.
With everything going on around us, we all get overwhelmed. We get overwhelmed by people, politics, work, responsibilities, family, money and even by ourselves.
I look back in the Bible at David. He was an emotional guy that we all can relate to. But he knew where to go when he got overwhelmed. He cried out to God, his “rock” and comforter, because it is the only place he could ever find complete safety or rest.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2
In other words, place me on stable ground. Lead me to a place where I can find stability, find my footing and feel secure despite how overwhelmed I feel.
There will be so many days where your heart is overwhelmed and you need to just cry out to God, your rock. And allow Him to be the one place in the world that you feel stability, complete comfort, peace and security.
Life can be overwhelming sometimes, but you are never alone. You have a place you can run to and find your footing again.

Father God, I cry out to you, especially in the moments I am overwhelmed. I run to you, my rock and stability and I ask that you would surround me with your peace and comfort. In Jesus’ name, amen.
