Are you honest with yourself?
This past week, after I freaked out about proper dishwasher etiquette, my husband snapped back. He told me that for the past few days, I have been angry and aggressive, lashing out more than usual.
I retaliated in defense mode, explaining to him that I’m a woman who has mood swings, that I’ve been stressed and then I proceeded to play victim.
I stormed out of the room and started to clean to sad music (that’s what I do when I’m stressed or frustrated lol). And while scrubbing the shower walls, I asked myself, what has been different the past few days that has made me act so crazy?
I tried making up reasons like stress or lack of communication with Bran or not feeling well, to explain away my aggression and snappiness.
But the Holy Spirit decided to step in and tell me the truth as to why I was a big ball of unexplainable frustration.
This is how that conversation went.
God: Sierra, what has been different the past few days?
Sierra: Uh, I don’t know. I’ve been stressing and freaking out more lately?
God: Yes, but why? What has been different?
Sierra: *Dramatic pause* Oh…
God: Yeah. You stopped spending time with me. And before you give me your excuses, there are none. When you start your day with me, you are setting the tone for the day. It forces you to be conscious of me throughout your day. And when you go days on end without talking to me or spending time with me, you change. You forget about me. You forget how to act, what to say and your intentions lack the purity they would had you spent time with me. You get angry, you don’t release what needs to be surrendered and it becomes all about you.
I don’t want a day to got by where I don’t spend time with God. We become different when we don’t spend time with him for days on end. We lose that connection, that Holy Spirit consciousness and that closeness.
Galations 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
And when we start our day with Him, it forces us to be conscious of him throughout the day. And even if we make mistakes that day, we are much quicker to make it right.
I want to change because I spend time with him every single day. Birds of a feather flock together, meaning that we become who we spend majority of our time with. And I want to become more like Jesus.
Response Journal Questions:
1. How many days do you go without spending alone time with God?
2. What do I need to change regarding my daily schedule to make that time with him daily?
3. What do you notice about yourself on the days you do and don’t spend time with him?
