Do you use God?
What do you mean, do I use God?
Do you just want or use God because he does things for you? Do you come to him only when times are tough? When you’re praying for healing? When you are hurting? When you have nothing left to turn to?
I am a culprit of this.
I run to him when I desperately need him. When the money is tight, when I’m sad, when I’m angry, when I need to vent, when I’m confused.
Most of us look at God as a “last resort”. That when you’ve done all you can humanly do, you finally run to God.
And God loves that. He wants us to run to him, to trust him and confide in him. He wants to help us, to answer our prayers, to heal and restore us, to comfort us, to bless us.
But is that the only time we run to him? (I feeeeel the conviction here!)
Maybe the truth is, that we use God.
We are like one of those terrible friends that we whined about in high school. Carla only comes to me when she needs something. It’s like, all I do for her is favor after favor.
What if God said said that about us?
It makes me sad that Sierra only comes to me when she needs something. And believe me, I want to give her all things, every desire of her heart. I want to be there for her, comfort her when she’s grieved, bless her when she needs it and even when she doesn’t, and heal every broken piece of her. But I wish she would come to me in the good times too. I want to hear about her day, laugh with her and rejoice in her triumphs.
Can you imagine somebody only wanting you because of the things you can do for them? Thank goodness God is doesn’t ever leave us, especially when we only pray to him when we need him.
A real relationship with God is not just coming to him when we need him, but in the good times too. Coming to him in excitement when we have a good day at work, cleaning the house to some upbeat praise music, reminiscing over all the prayers he’s answered and delighting ourselves simply in who God is.
Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
I challenge you today to dig deep and see if you have been using God. He loves us no matter what. But it is time for us to have a relationship that is not only based on spending time with him when we need something.
He desperately wants to be a part of every area of our lives.
Response Journal Questions:
1. Do I sometimes use God?
2. In what ways can I come to God and build my relationship with him without just needing something?
Pray with me!
Father God, I’m sorry for sometimes using you. I don’t want our relationship to be one sided, I want to come to you in the good times too. Thank you for constantly being there when I need you. Help me to live a life where I delight in you and rejoice with you. Help me to build a deeper, more intimate relationship with you.
In Jesus’ name, amen!
