So many people that I know claim that they don’t “feel” God.
They think that every worship song is supposed to give them goosebumps. That they are supposed to hear God’s voice clear as day as the clouds part before them. They feel disconnected from God if they aren’t always feeling something. They feel numb.
And then it makes them question God and their relationship with Him.
But maybe we think we aren’t feeling the presence of God because we expect it to always be presented in a certain way. Meanwhile, God doesn’t want to keep speaking to us the same way all the time. That would get boring.
Imagine that you have a best friend or spouse that you spend all your time with. Imagine that you went on the same date every single day.
You wear the same outfit. Eat the same food. Listen to the same music. Watch the same movie. Have the same conversation. Every single time you hung out.
It would get boring, right?
God doesn’t want to keep showing up in our lives the same way every single time. He wants to show up in different ways, speak in different ways, dazzle you in different ways, comfort you in different ways.
But sometimes you feel numb. But do you actually allow yourself to feel the presence of God?
He is always trying to reveal himself in ways that you understand. His presence is everywhere but there are moments we feel it more tangibly than others.
What if God has been trying to get your attention for quite a while now? But you couldn’t recognize it because you had certain expectations.
We think it’s supposed to feel a certain way.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? Psalm 139:7
So, if God’s presence never leaves us, maybe we need to be looking a little closer at the ways God is trying to communicate with us.
Maybe you feel the presence of God when you look at the faces of your children.
When a worship song or Bible verse speaks to you.
When you watching a beautiful sunset.
While you go for a quiet walk in the outdoors or watch the ocean waves crash.
When you have an uplifting conversation with a friend.
When you watch a movie.
When you eat some utterly delicious.
When your favorite song comes on the radio.
When you find something hilarious and can’t stop laughing.
Who said God and his presence weren’t in those moments? God never leaves our side and he’s always vying for our attention.
I feel the presence of God when I hear my husband laugh, when I taste a new homemade recipe, when dream of future babies, when I listen to Christmas songs, when I paint or design something, when I sit on my balcony in silence, when I write these devotionals.
God speaks to me. Shows me his love, his creativity, his humor, his comfort, his joy, his peace, his heart in all those moments. And I choose to consciously find and feel God in those moments.
He wants you to feel him everyday. We just need to know how to look for it and be aware of it. And we need to remember that it will not always look or feel the same.
You can make any moment, a “God moment”.
God knows you better than you know yourself and He knows what it is that will reach you. And he will do it in different ways because He wants you to discover different things about His character and who He is.
So stop being numb because it is a glorious adventure finding God in everyday life!
