When you hear the word Christian, the first thing that comes to your mind should not be hatred.
We are not supposed to be hateful, bitter, unforgiving representations of Christ. There is enough of that goiong around in the world we live in today.
But I still remember the first time I prayed for hatred…
It wasn’t praying for hatred in my heart towards others, politics or even my own circumstances.
But I sincerely prayed for hate.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Romans 12:9
I prayed that I would hate sin.
I would be on my knees crying out to God, “please give me a hatred for sin! I’m so sick of living this way.”
You see, I had hit rock bottom. I was angry, depressed, doing so many things I knew I shouldn’t be doing, nor did I understand why I did them.
So as my last resort, I prayed for hatred for the things that didn’t belong in my life. And guess what? It worked!
The more I prayed for hatred for sin, the more my life began to change.
I started to hate the bad habits and lifestyle that had held me captive for so long.
I began to have higher standards for myself. I began to understand why Jesus died on the cross to pay off the debt of my sin. I began to rise above sin. It was losing it’s hold over me.
Hating sin does not mean that you start hating other people who sin. In fact, it’s the opposite. You begin to have even more compassion and empathy for those who struggle with certain things.
You begin to lose judgement and start seeing people as people. You start clinging to good things and others that are around you, can’t help but follow you. And our love for God and others needs to be so sincere.
Maybe you need to pray for hatred for cigarettes. For alcohol. For meaningless relationships. For sex outside of marriage. For cussing. The possibilities are endless since we all struggle with so many different things.
Some people are scared to pray for hatred of sin because they don’t want to stop sinning. And I get that, it might be a scary prayer for some.
But I promise you, that when you pray for hatred for the sin in your life, your world will turn upside down!

Pray with me!
Father God, I pray for a hatred for sin. I want to love the things you love and hate the things you hate. Help me to love others sincerely and cling to what is good. I want to be an overcomer. Thank you for guiding me and speaking to me. Help me on this journey as I rid my life of things that I don’t need. Thank you for your compassion and grace.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
