I was watching Grey’s Anatomy (a dramatic show about doctors trying to save lives) and there was one character that kept eating at me. Meredith Grey.
She and her husband had a tragic miscarriage and kept trying to have a have a baby afterword. When she went to the doctor, they told her that she had a “hostile uterus”.
For the years following that doctors appointment, she kept saying things along the lines of, “Well, I have a hostile uterus so this isn’t going to be easy.” “Maybe we should just stop trying because my hostile uterus won’t ever let me carry a baby to term.” “I guess we lost our one chance because of my hostile uterus.”
And even when she did finally get pregnant years later, she wouldn’t even allow herself to get excited. She would say, “Don’t tell anybody about this because we know that with my hostile uterus, it might not even stick. Terrible things always happen to us.”
For over three seasons of the show, I would cringe every single time she would say it. Because I knew the truth…
that what she said with her mouth had power. (even if it was just a tv show)
I related to that on such a deep and personal level. I pray for things and ask God to show up in certain areas of my life, like my finances or my health. But then the next words that come out of my mouth are negating everything I’m praying for.
Proverbs 18:21 Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Another versions says
“What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words.”
I realized that I am a killer…without even realizing it. Our words have so much power. So much so, that they can bring life or death.
I kill things with my words. I bring death to my health, to my job, to my relationships, to my faith with my tongue.
Are there certain areas of your life that you speak more death over than others?
Are you full of faith in one area and lacking in another?
We need to be people who speak life constantly. And sometime we may not even believe it.
But that’s what faith is, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not yet seen (Heb 11:1)
I desperately wanted Meredith Grey to say, “It may not have have happened this month, but we will have a baby. My uterus is healthy.”
I need to do this in my own life instead of speaking death as an excuse when things aren’t going the way I want them to.
We need to speak as though we believe for what we are actually speaking. There is enough death in the world, it’s time for Christians to strengthen their faith and speak life instead of death.
I wrote a whole blog that goes more in depth about prayer and why it may seem like God isn’t answering here!
Journal Questions:
What comes out of your mouth more, life or death?
What are you speaking death over specifically?
Make a list of what you can say instead of speaking death:
Example
I am in so much pain all the time >> Jesus’ body was broken so I could be made whole
I have a hostile uterus >> My uterus is whole and healthy, in Jesus name
I am completely broke >> God provides all my needs
I am so ugly >> I am beautiful just the way God made me
Pray with me!
Father God, I want to be someone that speaks life and not death. Help me to use my words wisely and speak in faith. I want to see you move in every area of my life. Forgive me for speaking death, especially when I lack faith. I believe you want good things for me because you love me. I love you and I give you my mouth. Help me to encourage, love and speak life with my tongue.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
