When I was younger, I went to college to be a pastor.
I thought that was the coolest ministry job. People looked up to you, relied on you, you got to preach and lead people.
But after getting my license to be a pastor, I didn’t know if I actually wanted to be one. I just thought, well, if you’re going into ministry, you have to be a pastor or a worship leader.
The thing is, I was not cut out to be a pastor of a church. I was meant to a small group leader, a friend, an encourager, a prayer warrior.
For a long while, I was a worship leader. I thought that because I could sing, that was the only place for me. I got burnt out. I didn’t know how to serve the church consistently.
I thought I was meaningless if I didn’t have the fancy title.
In different seasons, you may use different gifts.
We are all a part of the body of Christ, but we all can’t be the head. We all can’t be the hands and feet.
Some of us need to be the eyes, who take the time to see people.
Some of us need to be the ears, who listen to the needs of the hurting.
Some of us need to be the mouth, who prophesy and speak life into people.
Some of us need to be the brain, who handle administrative side of things.
Some of us need to be the elbow (funny bone), who bring joy and laughter in times of hardship.
Some of us need to be the arm, who welcome people and take them under their wing.
1 Corinthians 12:27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
No matter what your gifting is, you are a meaningful part of the body of Christ. You have a purpose and a place.
Not all of us are going to be pastors, worship leaders or counselors. Some of us are the ushers who pass the offering buckets. Some of us are the prayer partners who you can pray with after service. Some of us are the volunteers in children’s ministry. Some of us are the schedule coordinators or secretaries. Some of us are the small group leaders.
What are you good at? And if you don’t know, ask the people closest to you what you are good and gifted at. Because they may see things in you that you didn’t see in yourself.
We all are a part of the body.
Which part of the body are you?
Response Journal Questions:
1. What are gifts that I can use right now in this season of life?
2. What is my purpose within the body of Christ?
3. How can I follow through with my purpose? (Ex: join that small group, serve, mentor people)
Pray with me!
Father God, thank you that I get to be a part of the body. Thank you for placing gifts in me and help me to understand what they are. Reveal to me what my purpose is and what I should be doing as a part of the body in this season. I want to be used by you and for you.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
