Are you in a funk?
I remember talking to one of my close friends who has a very similar personality to mine. I asked her if she ever had days where she just felt off or in a funk. When she told me that she had the same experiences all the time, I felt a lot better knowing that I wasn’t the only one.
Any one of us can find ourselves in funk. A time of uncertainty, sadness, confusion, anxiety. And sometimes we can’t even name why we feel that way.
For you, maybe it’s a case of the winter blues. Maybe you just went through a breakup or loss of some kind. Maybe you just feel kind of lost and unable to get your life together. Or maybe, it’s just one of those days.
Whatever the circumstance (or lack of one), you are not the only Christian to feel this way.
But the problem is when we are in a funk for a long time and can’t seem to get out of it.
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!
Psalm 42: 11
If this verse was written in the Bible, it was written for a reason, to show us that we are not the only ones who get sad or discouraged. And it shows us how to break out of it!
When we get into a funk that we can’t seem to break free from, that is when we remind ourselves to put our hope in God.
This is when we force ourselves to praise him, even when we don’t feel like it. That is what changes us.
You cannot tell me that when you start actively singing praise music or praising God with your words for all the things He’s done for you, that your mood doesn’t change, even a little.
Whatever kind of funk we are in, we must be hopeful and putting that hope only in God. We cannot just hope that our circumstances will change. We cannot just hope that we feel better. That is why we put our hope in the one thing that is certain and that will never fail us.
And we praise him anyway.
I know that we all have these days where we feel off. But just remember, that you have authority of your feelings and emotions. Remind your heart to be joyful. Remind yourself to place your hope in Jesus. Remind your spirit to praise God despite the feelings.
Let’s get out of the funk, together.

Pray with me!
Father God, I don’t want to keep feeling this way on and off. Help me to get out of this funk. Right now, I put my hope in you alone, knowing you are there for me. Help me to praise you no matter what I’m feeling. Thank you for being there for me. I praise you for who you are.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
