Are you distracted?
I have had so many goals in my life. Have I achieved them all? Not even close.
Because. I have a problem with starting something and never finishing it, or seeing it through to completion.
I know that a lot of us are like that.
We get excited about something and we plan for it, spend money on it, get excited about it. And then we get distracted.
Maybe it was a diet or fitness plan. A business idea. A home remodel. A cross country move. A Bible reading plan. A goal or dream.
In this day and age, we have a HUGE issue being focused and staying on task. With phones, social media, friends, family, and life issues coming in and distracted us. steering our focus.
I love this story and exchange between Jesus and Peter.
The disciples just saw Jesus walk on water towards them and they freak out!
Matthew 14:28-32
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
There are so many things to take from this tiny passage.
When Peter realized it was Jesus, he stepped out in boldness and faith toward Jesus, his goal.
But when he saw the wind and waves and got distracted. He forgot that that Jesus was right there.
When you take your eyes off of Jesus in the middle of the storm or the hard parts of life, you fail.
We must starve our distractions. And we do that by reminding ourselves of who is right in front of us, to pick us up, especially when it’s hard. And by getting rid of the things that distract us altogether.
Psalm 119:15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
And after starving our distractions, we feed our focus, by focusing on Jesus and his ways. Fixing our eyes right on him. Remembering that he is the one who gives us the strength to press on. He calms the storm.
We can accomplish any goal. We can weather any storm. We can overcome the darkest circumstances. Only when we fix our focus and focus on Jesus.
So, are you distracted?

Father God, forgive me for allowing distractions to derail me. I want to have my eyes fixed on you. I want to be an overcomer. I want to achieve the goals I’ve set out to accomplish.
