When you are in the midst of heartbreak, you tend to forget all thoughts of reason. Going through devastating heartbreak myself, these are the most important things to remember when your heart gets broken by anyone you’ve ever truly cared about.
A Letter To the Girl Whose Heart Was Broken
Right now, your world probably feels like it’s falling apart in front of you.
You’ve probably experienced days of lost appetite and nights full of stomach knots, with your racing thoughts keeping you awake.
You’ve probably heard that certain song on the radio or saw a couple flaunting their love right in front of you and wished you could time travel to when things weren’t so much like a nightmare.
I’ve been there, and let me tell you, you are not alone.
The only potential downside to having such a big heart is the amount of love you freely give. You love hard, and when that love is taken away, you hurt. Hard.
Relationships aren’t meant to be perfect and none of us were promised a spotless love story where no one gets their heart broken and it’s all rainbows and butterflies.
Life comes with a side of DIFFICULT. It’s about time we all stop pretending that our life is perfect on social media and give it to the world the way it is: messy and confusing.
Here’s the cool part, though: God knows exactly what we need in order to take the messy and confusing that life has to offer and make it beautiful. That’s right! If we allow Him to come in and write our story, there’s no way it won’t turn out beautiful. I mean, come on, He created the mountains and the oceans. What makes you think He can’t make your life just as beautiful and intricate, or even more so?
Okay, so back to your broken heart. Right now, you have the choice to let this heartbreak wreck you or make you. Which one do you prefer? If your answer is that you want it to make you, here’s what you need to remember when your heart is broken…
Go to God.
Surrender everything you have to Him. 1 Peter 5:7 says “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” It’s likely that you feel a bit anxious at this time of utter heartache. Listen to what the Word says. It begins with diving into His word and studying the sacred truths that are written throughout.
When my heart was broken for the first time, I knew I had to completely depend on God to get me through the challenging months ahead. It was hard and it was something I was not used to because my natural habit was to depend on the people I loved. Specifically, the boy who broke my heart. My first love. It cut deep. And it showed me a side of myself that I had never seen before.
I had never truly depended on God for anything, even after countless teachings in church on Sundays insisting that I do. Little did I know, I was about to embark on the spiritual journey of a lifetime.
Now, the next several months were tough. Some days excruciatingly painful, even. Heartbreak is a feeling you can’t imagine until you actually experience it. One thing I do know is that God was holding me through it all.
Psalm 34:78 says that “God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit.” I held on to verses like that and chose to believe them with my whole heart because that’s what faith is. I was able to really self-reflect and use that time to grow in every aspect of my life and hand it all over to God.
Looking back, that time was crucial to my spiritual growth. My what-seemed-to-be perfect little world needed to be demolished if anything good was going to happen in me; and that it did.
Today I can confidently say that the heartbreak I went through had a very strong purpose. Yours can too. It taught me a few things to remember when your heart is broken…
1. God comes first. He is in control.
2. No one on this earth can satisfy every single desire of your heart, so do not try to give them such an impossible responsibility.
3. You learn to appreciate a lot more when you focus on living in the present rather than the future.
4. Everything happens in His perfect timing. (Isaiah 60:22)
5. Life will not be easy, but you can get through anything with God.
6. Prayer is VITAL. Pray about everything. God loves when His children come to Him.
7. Your singleness is not the end of the world and your worth is not found in a relationship, nor should you put it there.
8. Community is important and necessary for the healing process. God intends for us to be in community with one another.
9. Chasing after the Lord is all you can do at a time like this, and when your heart is finally healed… don’t stop chasing.
In a couple years, you will look back at this time in your life in pure awe of God’s powerful faithfulness. Keep running the race for Jesus because He has some pretty cool stuff planned for you. Your only job now is to remain patient and persistent despite your heartbreak.
You got this, girl.
